Futbol, or soccer, has long been a national obsession in South American countries like Brazil and Colombia. But it is another story for Ecuador, which took 68 years to qualify for the World Cup.

DREAMTOWN portrays the struggle three young men face as they individually compete for their place on Ecuador’s professional soccer team.
The dreams of a pro, a protégé, and a novice collide as these afro-Ecuadorians perform for community, national, and international audiences in hopes of bringing home more than just a medal.
The film is set in the impoverished backwater town of El Chota Valley, a place where the primary export is soccer talent and, prior to the 2002 World Cup, was invisible to the rest of the world. Today it serves as the local pipeline to the communities’ dreams.

Director: Betty Bastidas
Producer: Maia Monasterios
Editor: Jesus Silva

DREAMTOWN is the winner of the 2010 HBO/NALIP Grant and it is feature on PBS’s Frontline World.
